I figure that everyone else does it, and I certainly have the time to do so right now, so how about a year in review? Let’s go!

I’ll go through each group and talk about what they did, what I liked, and what I didn’t.

Morning Musume – Resonant Blue and Pepper Keibu were their only two singles, but they also released the Cover You album. They were in “Cinderella”, ended Haromoni@, started Yorosen!, had more PVs for a single song than ever before (Resonant Blue) and started to perform in places other than just Japan.  Personally, I liked all of that. It would have been nice for them to get one more single in there, but the album was almost like one big single anyway.

Berryz Koubou – Released Dschinghis Khan, plus the remix, as well as Yuke Yuke Monkey Dance and Madayade, and the studio album 5(FIVE). Performed/received an award at the Asia Song Festival. Ended Berikyuu! and joined Yorosen!. Lines started to be distributed a bit better. I’m also a fan of everything Berryz Koubou did this year. I generally like their singles, and I’m glad to see them divvying up the parts a bit more evenly.

°C-ute – Released LALALA Shiawase no Uta, Namida no Iro, Edo no Temari Uta II, FOREVER LOVE, Koero! Rakuten Eagles  plus the album 3rd ~Love Escalation~. Ended Berikyuu! and joined Yorosen!. Had a controversy about how Hitler was “taught” during Yorosen!. Maimi and Airi were lead on 3 of the 5 singles, and Maimi was center on 3 of the 5 singles. Those of you who read this blog know I’m not into °C-ute that much, so don’t be surprised that I wasn’t a fan of what they did this year. I prefered LALALA Shiawase no Uta to their other singles, but still didn’t particularly like it. And while I like Airi and Maimi? You’ve got 7 girls in the group. If Momusu can usually highlight their 9 members, why can’t you do 7? 2008 and still not a fan.

Ongaku Gatas – Released Come Together as well as the studio album 1st Goodsal. Mano Erina and Mika Muto graduated. Elder Club graduation was announced, which may signal the end of this group. OG didn’t do badly this year, though it would have been nice to have more than one single. They’ve only done 1 a year so far, though. I’ve got my fingers crossed that they’ll continue as a group outside of the H!P name because I do enjoy them, but I’m not that hopeful. Come Together was the worst single so far, but I think only because the other 2 were so much better, not that it was bad.

Buono! – Released Renai Rider, Kiss!Kiss!Kiss!, Gachinko de Ikou, and Rottara Rottara, plus the album Cafe Buono!. Were in Pizza-La commercials. Despite my dislike for Momoko, I still liked everything Buono! did this year. Their singles are amazingly catchy, and they have a distinct sound within H!P, too. Their outfits are always interesting, too.

High-King – Formed for the Cinderella musical from members of Momusu, Berryz, °C-ute, and the Eggs. This 5-member unit only did one single, but it was well-regarded as one of the best singles with possibly the best B-side ever in all of at least 2008. The group will likely not reform except possibly in concerts.

Milky Way – Released Anataboshi and Tan Tan Taan!. Both were good singles, and I’m definitely hoping for more Kikkawa Yuu now.

Athena & Robikerrottsu – Seishun Love Lunch was their final single, as the associated anime ended. I wasn’t a fan of any member of this group, so I’ll be honest… I didn’t even give it a listen.

Melon Kinenbi – Only released Charisma . Kirei. It had a shoddy video, but is still a decent song. The group announced that they would continue as a group after the Elder Club graduation.

Shugo Chara Eggs- Released Minna no Tamago. First major release by a group consisting solely of H!P Eggs. Cute, but not a bombshell of a song.

Viyuuden – Released “Nanni mo Iwazu ni I LOVE YOU”, a cover of a Momusu song. Disbanded shortly thereafter. I like the cover of this, and the video (with the very candid-looking bits) was a nice goodbye.

HANGRY & ANGRY – A non-H!P unit, technically, but they did release their first single “Kill Me Kiss Me”, a radical departure from the typical H!P fare. First group to have a MySpace, and to release formally in the USA. Announced plans to tour in the US and Europe, also a first. I adore this group, and think that they could definitely be going places, though after the Elder Club graduation, it definitely won’t be a part of H!P.

Abe Natsumi – Released 16sai no Koi Nante with Yajima Maimi from °C-ute, and Screen. Screen especially failed to report good results. But, I still found both songs easy to listen to, if not particularly memorable.

Matsuura Aya – Released Kizuna. Ayaya looked like a grandmother in this video, and the song was unimpressive.

Fujimoto Miki – Released Oki Tegami. Done in a different style than her previous solo work (similar to enka instead of the sugary pop), I found this my favorite of her songs, easily.

Koharu Kusumi – Released Papancake as a soloist. Got a lot of flac for her overexaggerated singing style. Released the Kirari to Fuyu album which received many more compliments for her singing style. None of it compares to her early Kirari stuff, I don’t think, but I still think it’s enjoyable to listen to.

Satoda Mai – Released Mou Sugu Christmas with Goda Kyoudai, as well as Hi wa, Mata Noboru with Aladdin. The Aladdin song did rather well on the charts, but I couldn’t get into it, or the Christmas song. Sorry, Satoda.

Mano Erina – Released Mano Piano, Lucky Aura, and LaLaLa-SoSoSo as indie singles. Never looked her age at all (17). I think Manoeri is charming. She’s a decent pianist. But, I think her voice leaves something to be desired.

Ice Creamusume – Formed through the NEW STAR auditions. My favorites are Youko (always Lightbulb to me, though) and Shenshen so far, but we’ll see when they actually start performing together?

I think that’s it? There’s quite a bit to look forward to in the new year, though. There’s a new MoMusu single on the horizon, and the promise of another new material album. Berryz has their first best-of coming out which will include a new song. Buono has a new single and album scheduled for early in the year. Matsuura Aya will get another album, Maeda Yuki will get a single. Satoda will put out another single with Goda Kyoudai. Koharu will release another single. C-ute will have another album. And that’s just in the first 2 months of 2009! It looks like it will shape up to be a good year. Elder Club’s graduation doesn’t seem to be hindering any of their releases, so hopefully the girls there will be more active post-graduation. My fingers are crossed!

Oh, and to top it all off? Aibon is supposed to start releasing music again next year, too!

Rather than attempting to write knowledgeably about the Taiwan New Star! auditions, I’ll lead you here to the Stardust blog where you can see pictures and someone else’s impressions of the girls. I’ve watched very little of the auditions, but I have watched Lightbulb. I like her.

Also! American Wota is back. It was the first H!P blog I ever visited, so it’s nice to have it back. (The Wota Distractions were missed. ;_;)

Just a few more days before MoMusu’s “Pepper Keibu” single is released. Additionally, Ayaya’s “Aya the Witch” DVD, Ongaku Gatas’ “Come Together” and a new Sayumi photobook.

I’ve very ready to see a new version of the “Pepper Keibu” PV. While I like the one that’s out, I want a better dance shot, and I want one that has something else, too, maybe? I doubt they’ll pull out as many versions as they did for “Resonant Blue”, but it would be odd to just have the one.

In other news, it seems that Chinami from Berryz either lost her cellphone, or it was stolen. Regardless, the police seem to be on the lookout for it. Pictures from said phone have been leaked, though people better with picture technology than I am have stated that the pictures come from more than one type of phone. It *is* possible that Chinami had uploaded them online from an older phone and a newer phone, or some of the pictures were sent by other girls or something. Still, they’re rather candid photos, though nothing “bad” appears in them. I don’t support this “leak”, so I won’t post the pictures myself, but if you’re industrious enough, you’re sure to find them.

This makes me think of an article I read last week or so about a guy who tried to go 48 hours without using Google in any way. He completely failed. From checking his e-mail to getting a map to needing to know a currency exchange, Google was there. It makes me wonder if I could go without H!P websites for 2 days. I’m constantly checking lyrics, release dates, news and opinion posts, looking at pictures… I’m sure I could do it, but I have gotten to the point where I don’t consciously follow H!P. It just kind of happens. How about you guys?

Nothing official yet, so rumors abound about the new Morning Musume single. There are three titles that it could supposedly go by:

First, “Ame no Furai Hoshi de wa Ai Senai Darou”. I think this might be a c/w track rather than an a-side. For one, the only solo lines in it? Are panda lines sung in their native tongue. Cool as that is and all, I can’t see it faring well with their predominately Japanese audience. Additionally, the name is too long for a single. Five words is about the most you can really get away with before people have a hard time asking for it by name.

Second, “Hikigane wo Hiku”. Only, this one doesn’t seem to have any actual base in fact. No one knows where the rumor originated, or what kind of song it is, or anything really, so I’m going to say this one is pretty much baseless, though very much so a Tsunku-made title. It’s short, memorable, and to the point.

Third, “Pepper Keibu”. Those of you who don’t catch the significance here don’t follow MoMusu that much. “Pepper Keibu” is the name of a well-known Pink Lady track. Not only did MoMusu perform with Pink Lady, but Pink Lady songs aren’t unknown to the repetoire of H!P artists. W and Pink Lady were arm in arm sometimes. Additionally, Morning Musume’s leader and co-leader recently starred as Pink Lady in a drama about the life of the original creator of “Pepper Keibu” and many other great J-pop songs. Pink Lady redid this song and a bunch of their others back in 2004, but I think I’d like to hear a full-on Morning Musume version. Though, it’s a pretty powerful song. I wonder how many of the girls in the group have the kind of voice to really pull it off. I think this is the most likely of the track names. (Hello!Online lists this as the title now, though that could be an error or an edit by someone who really doesn’t know.)

Still, with it due at the end of this month, why don’t we know anything about it yet? Typically, we’ve seen pictures or heard something on the radio, or *something* at this point to have something of an idea of whether we’re going to drop the cash for single A, B, or C. (Or whatever…) Personally, I’d like another super happy genki song. I don’t want another ballad so soon. MoMusu *can* pull them off, but I like them when they’re upbeat.

Off on the other end of the H!P spectrum is the new Ongaku Gatas single. I think it’s a decent song, though not particularly memorable. The video is best for the behind-the-scenes stuff. But, there’s talk of danger for OG because there’s only one version of the single coming out!

Yet, I think UFA is right to do this for this release. It’s re-testing the waters. It’s making sure that this group without ManoEri can still be at least mildly profitable. It’s making sure that they made the right decision. I think that even if this single doesn’t do well, there will still be more OG. Just like, I think that if Shugo Chara actually ends after season 2, they won’t do away with Buono! until they stop making money.

First and foremost, UFA, like any other company, is about making money. It’s why their idols get exploited for their, ahem, talents. It’s why H!P photobooks are borderline and sometimes not-so-borderline gravure, even for some of the younger girls. If they can make a buck off some old man perving over Momoko’s ta-tas, they will… and especially since it’s not just one old man, but a bunch of them, and usually more than one buck.

My husband doesn’t believe me when I describe the typical Japanese Berryz Koubou fan to him. He can’t see the appeal of them to older men. Whereas, I can’t see where they’d lack appeal to anyone. Same with most of the girls in H!P. I’m in it mostly for the music, but I know not everyone is. I think most of us are at least a bit though. ^_~

Additionally, if anyone’s interest was piqued by my discussion on cover groups? I just released a solo single through Sekai no Melody, here. I cover several H!P songs, several anime songs, and also show my love for w-inds and Rie Fu. I’m decent, at least, so come check me out? And… blog 3! And, today I’ll talk more about some of the smaller H!P groups.

First off, Ongaku Gatas. Let me be the first to admit that I don’t really *get* this group yet. It’s a training grounds for some of the eggs, but it’s a full group, yet they’re still just “Eggs”, right? However, it’s also well-populated with people who don’t really have another group at the moment. Satoda Mai, the last member of Country Musume, plus three former members of Morning Musume… one of whom came back for the group, one of whom left Morning Musume as leader for the group, and another who is left with the group as her main job after her other group (which I liked better) disbanded… Yet, I look at it and wonder if it’s just going to be some kind of in-between project. Eggs seem to be in the group until Tsunku can decide what to do with them (like Manoeri) and older girls seem to go to the group when they’ve graduated from something else… and Tsunku hasn’t yet decided what to do with them. So, I wonder if we’ll see a notice soon saying that a certain *other* former MM member who has recently returned from down under will be joining OG.

What I’d like to see H!P do? Something with Elder Club! If you’re playing around with groups with former MM members, then why not toss Mako in with Marippe and Kei and a graduated Takahashi Ai (I’ll talk more about this tomorrow!) and make some kind of next-gen Tanpopo as Berryz has recently become a kind of next-gen Mini Moni. Mako would have the worst voice of the four, but she’d make up for it with charisma. They could pull away a bit from the genki-pop and shine. They’re all experienced. They can all work a crowd. Then again, that’s just wishful thinking. I want to see those girls more! (Of course, at this rate, they could just make an “Evening Musume” of all of the former members who are still with H!P.)

On another smaller group front, I’ll talk about Buono!. I’d really like to see this group get to do something other than Shugo Chara stuff. Sure, they made an album, but all of the singles are SC stuff… There are times when the harmonies on the tracks blend together in a somewhat robotic way, but they’re still good. I like that they’re Berryz-heavy, too. Still, to really keep me in, I want to see more than the same thing over and over again. Give me genki, but spin it a new way sometimes!

I’ll keep an eye on both of these groups and hope to see them become something a bit stronger. I’ll also hope that UFA won’t run them into the group like they have with Viyuuden and such. +

SUPER HAPPY GENKI HYPERFORCE GO!

I’ve been meaning to start a Hello! Project blog for a while now, and now that I’m almost done moving into a new place that’s a little more relaxing to live in, I figured there was no better time to start. As an introduction, I’ll discuss my feelings on some of the current H!P groups so you know where I stand. I’ll be trying my best not to outright bash any particular members or groups, but I can be a bitch when it comes to that, so expect at least one group to get that a bit.

I’ll start with Morning Musume, the flagship. As a rule, I like MoMusu. I think that they’re very different now than they were during “Golden Era”, but I like both incarnations. I particularly like Junjun, Kamei, Takahashi, and particularly dislike Aika and Linlin. I used to like Reina, but I don’t like her in front a lot. Koharu bothers me just because she’s not consistent. I disregard Kirari stuff in regards to MoMusu because I know that her character in Kirarin Revolution isn’t supposed to have a great voice at all. Still, she can be a strong singer, and once she works on that, I’ll probably like her more. Sayumi is slowly but surely growing on me. And, I tend to forget about Gaki-san. I used to dislike her, but once I saw her in the Mechaike specials, I mellowed on her a bit and now don’t really pay her much attention. Still, I’m likely to like their new singles.

Then, Berryz Koubou. Let me start off with saying that I think that Shimizu Saki is one of the most underrated talents in H!P. I don’t like Risako that much, though she’s working on her problems as she grows up a bit more, so we’ll see. I’m not that fond of Maasa, and I tend to forget Yurina altogether. Also, I’ve recently become a very big Chinami fan. There’s very little Berryz stuff I don’t like, though their Tsukiattwseruhpwoerh whatever single kind of put me to sleep in a bad way. Yet, I doubt I go more than two days without listening to Dschingis Khan and Yuke Yuke Monkey Dance. They’re almost like a new-wave Mini Moni now, and I like that a lot.

Then… C-ute. I *don’t* like C-ute, unlike everyone else in the blogosphere, it seems. And, really, I tried. I’ve listened to every song they’ve done, and I’ve also seen all of the PVs just to see if I could change my mind and get into more H!P, only I couldn’t. That’s not to say I hate all of the members. I tend to like Erika and Kanna and Airi, and Maimi is kind of growing on me maybe? Though, for some reason, I hate Chisato. I always just want to kick her off to the side as I think she ruins the aesthetic of the group as she looks like she has some life-threatening illness and will keel over any second. I have no idea why. I was close to liking Namida no Iro, but it just wasn’t quite good enough. I do, however, like Ookina Ai de Motenashite, though it’s less for being a C-ute song, and more for being a genki song.

Ongaku Gatas is next, and I don’t really have much of an opinion. I’m open to more of their stuff which I know is coming soon, but I don’t think either of their singles so far has been incredible.

I like Buono!, though I wish UFA would do some non-anime singles for them. I am also not a big fan of some of their harmonies as they come out sounding kind of robotic.

I guess I should also include GAM in here? They haven’t officially disbanded yet that I know of, and both Ayaya and Mikitty are back in business, so I hope it’s only a matter of time before they’re working together again. The strange thing is that I dislike each girl immensely, yet I love GAM. It’s probably for the strong lesbian overtones, I’ll admit. Yet, I can still say that I watched Ayaya in Sukeban Deka, though I did watch it more for the potential of Okada Yui’s boobs. Yet, they hid the entire movie! (And I impressed myself with recognizing one of the girls from Melon Kinenbi!)

And, speaking of Melon Kinenbi, I like them, but it’s been a while in the making. I don’t follow them like I do Berryz and MoMusu, yet I can say that This is Unmei! is one of my favorite songs ever, so… I don’t watch their PVs or concerts or anything, but I do make a point to listen to their new singles. I also think H!P needs to treat them better!

I’m not really into many of the soloists, but I do like Nakazawa Yuko a bit. Her song GET ALONG WITH YOU was part of my intro to H!P.

I was technically introduced to H!P a while ago, around the time of MoMusu’s Mr. Moonlight, but it wasn’t until quite a bit more recently that I really got into H!P and started being obsessed, which wasn’t until right before MoMusu’s Kanashimi Twilight. I discovered that several people on my Livejournal friends list were big H!P fans and once I could get my hands on everything, I did. (Thank you, Ciara, for gimme_hp, and Vanessa for that initial intro way back when.)

And as for the title of this blog? It’s a running joke between my husband and I. While watching some Mini Moni PVs, I inadvertantly showed him Strawberry Pie which scarred him for life. He claimed that it was so far beyond genki that it needed to be called something fitting, and together we came up with Super Happy Genki Hyperforce Go! (which was initially the name for all of my H!P mix CDs that I leave in our car so that we can identify them).

So, here we go. I won’t always talk about the new things going on in the H!P world, but I will try to review new singles and PVs and discuss big changes and new/graduating members, etc. I may also discuss some of the scandals… we’ll see. I tend to look at Hello! Online every few days at least, so I stay pretty on top of the news. ^_^
